Shelf ยท Est. 2024 ยท Run by Teenagers

Books curated
by teenagers
who actually read.

Three curated bundles. Handpicked with the stubborn taste of someone who just discovered Octavia Butler and won't stop talking about it.

Stack of colorful paperback books slightly disheveled on a wooden surface
for the feelings

The Just-Got-Dumped Box

Six books for when your heart is a bruise and you need someone to understand. Includes Octavia Butler, Ocean Vuong, and one zine we made ourselves at 2am.

Books stacked with architectural drawings and pencils scattered around them
builds things

Future Architect Starter Kit

Not just blueprints. Art history, utopian fiction, a Buckminster Fuller biography, and a graphic novel about a teenager who builds bridges. Five books that rewire how you see cities.

Well-worn paperbacks with dog-eared pages and handwritten notes visible in margins
read this anyway

Stuff Your Teacher Won't Assign

The books that got banned, the essays that made people uncomfortable, and the poetry that shouldn't be read quietly. Seven titles your curriculum is scared of.

The Transformation

What happens to a shelf
after Shelf.

Drag the slider. See the difference. Three shelves, three transformations โ€” yours, your kid's, and a whole classroom.

Your Shelf

From generic recommendations to a shelf that actually knows you

Amazon shows you what everyone else bought. We show you what you specifically need right now โ€” because a 16-year-old who just finished The Hate U Give is ready for something very specific next.

Your personal shelf

Drag to reveal

Empty minimalist white bookshelf with only a few generic books
Before
Vibrant overflowing bookshelf with colorful spines, zines, and handwritten notes
After

Your Kid's Shelf

A birthday gift that doesn't have a charger

Parents tell us their kids say "thank you" for the first time ever about a gift. Because these books were chosen by teenagers for teenagers โ€” not by an algorithm optimizing for "age-appropriate."

Your kid's shelf

Drag to reveal

Child's bedroom with a small empty bookshelf and generic plastic toys
Before
Teenager's cozy reading nook with colorful books, fairy lights, and cozy blanket
After

Your Classroom

A classroom library that students actually open

English teachers on $200 budgets have built entire classroom libraries with us. We have a teacher rate. We'll write the shelf labels by hand. We'll include a zine about why each book matters.

A whole classroom

Drag to reveal

Dusty classroom corner with outdated textbooks and sparse shelving

Bright classroom library corner overflowing with colorful diverse books and student artwork

Build My Shelf
Two teenagers shelving books in their small colorful bookstore, laughing

"We opened because we couldn't find a bookstore that trusted teenagers."

โ€” Maya & Jonah, founders

Our Story

We opened a bookstore
at sixteen.

Maya read Parable of the Sower in the back of a math class and couldn't find anyone who'd heard of it. Jonah spent three months trying to get his school library to stock Giovanni's Room. We opened Shelf because the books we needed weren't where teenagers could find them.

Every bundle is chosen by us โ€” actual teenagers, with actual opinions, who argue about books in our group chat at midnight. The staff picks wall changes every eleven days because that's how often our minds change.

What readers say

"

My daughter has never said thank you for a gift before. She texted me from her room at 11pm to say the Ocean Vuong book changed her life. Worth every penny.

I teach 10th grade English on a $200 classroom library budget. Shelf gave me a teacher rate and wrote shelf labels by hand. My students actually open the books.

Mr. David Reyes

"

I was looking for something that wasn't designed for my grandparents. This is it.

Amara, 14

Actual teenager

"

The bundle came wrapped in tissue paper with a handwritten note from Maya. I cried before I even opened it. The books were incredible too.
